Keynote Speaker: Ed Morales

Ed Morales, MPP, MSW, LICSW, is a trainer and social worker based in Minneapolis, MN. In addition to being an adoptive parent, Ed is a Training Supervisor with Hennepin County Children and Family Services; a Certified Trainer and Consultant with Think:Kids at Massachusetts General Hospital; serves as Community Faculty with the University of Minnesota’s School of Social Work; sits on the Board of Foster Advocates; and provides training, clinical supervision and professional development through his LLC, Socorro Consulting.

Keynote Speaker: Maria Silva

Maria Silva is the Chief Operating Officer at Allegheny Family Network, a family-run organization providing peer support to families raising children with behavioral health concerns. She is a Credentialed High Fidelity Wraparound Role Coach, has obtained Temple University Family Development Leadership Credential, and is a Certified Peer Support Provider from the Federation of Families. Since 1996, Ms. Silva has provided peer-to-peer crisis and emotional support to parents raising children with behavioral health concerns and cognitive disabilities in various roles and positions. Ms. Silva serves on the Peoples Oakland Board of Directors, on the ETUDES Steering Committee, frequently represents families and parent peer support at the Center for Public Service Psychiatry, University of Pittsburgh fellowship, and serves on the SKIP for PA Investigative Team. Ms. Silva has served on the Allegheny County Mental Health/Intellectual Disability Advisory Board for over 10 years, was the Parent Tri-Chair on the Pennsylvania System of Care Partnership Evaluation Subcommittee and continues to serve on other advisory and parent boards representing families statewide.

Overview: Participants will hear from a parent with lived expertise and a family engagement professional about the importance of engaging families at each step of Family Group Decision Making (FGDM), and the benefits of building a lifetime network of support. While learning about the process, participants will hear from a parent who participated in FGDM conferences and her experiences at each stage of the process. We will be exploring engagement strategies with special consideration and discussion regarding the work with parents who experienced substance abuse issues which include the family dynamics and safety planning before, during, and after the conferences.

Presenter(s): Jennifer Napp Evans, Administrator of Snyder County CYS; Alexandra Sholley, Guardian Ad Litem, Union and Snyder Counties; Donna Shriver, IL Coordinator for Snyder County CYS; Kim Shemory, Agency & Family Resource Specialist for Snyder County CYS.

Overview: Attorneys need to understand and be open to FGDM, family meeting interventions, programs, and services, as well as speak with their clients openly about their benefits. Snyder County has seen success in its enhanced legal representation and resource parent mentors who teach, coach, listen, advocate, and support families to thrive and maintain a favorable family structure. They provide support and assistance to families who have been experiencing significant stressors and are at risk of having children removed or who are working toward reunification.

Overview: This session will explore the role of Family Group Decision Making (FGDM) in supporting families experiencing domestic violence. Safety, engagement, empowerment, challenges, and confidentiality will be addressed while equipping practitioners with practical strategies to facilitate effective and supportive FGDM meetings.

Overview: This workshop will inspire organizations to adopt family teaming internally as an approach to interacting within the office and one that extends to working with families and communities. An internal family team perspective provides leadership strategies that support the recruitment and retention of qualified, strengths-based practitioners.

Overview: The Truancy Outreach Program follows the Basic Education Curricular (BEC) and the Venango County Truancy Protocol to provide preventative services to students and their families in order to improve attendance and decrease referrals to Children Youth Family Services. The program utilizes FGDM and Crisis Rapid meetings to mitigate the circumstances leading to truancy.
